"The greatest pleasure of life is love." Euripides
8: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9: For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55
Over the last few weeks I've been watching the Reality TV show, Dancing on Ice, where celebrities are paired off with professional ice skaters and then trained to ice skate. They then compete to be ice dance champions. The format is as follows: after the celebrities have performed with their dance partners, the judges (ice panel) give them points, which accounts for 50% of their final scores. The audience votes decides the other 50%. During the Result show, the final scores are announced. The two couples with the lowest scores compete in the "dance-off" and the judges then get to decide who should be eliminated.
Just because the judges like particular skaters doesn't mean the audience always share their views. Coleen Nolan, for example, keeps getting voted in by the audience even though she's being judged by the experts to be the weakest skater.
While my mother and I were watching last night's programme I noticed Melinda Messenger and her partner were dancing to the song "Let's Hear It for the Boy" by Deniece Williams, which I happen to LOVE. While Jessica Taylor and her partner were performing to "Unbreak My Heart" by Toni Braxton, my mother said how much she loves that song. I told her I love it as well.
Later when they were announcing the final results, Coleen Nolan was voted back in even though the judge panel had given her the lowest scores. The audience must really love her. I wasn't that surprised that Melinda Messenger was at the bottom as she's been consistently receiving fewer votes. She was either not very popular or expected to be unpopular. She even admitted to the host that she'd expected to be at the bottom two. I was shocked, however, to see Jessica Taylor at the bottom as she had been the judges' second favourite. Then it all made sense why.
"It's all your fault why Jessica is at the bottom," I said to my mother.
"What do you mean?"
"Because of how much you love that Toni Braxton song."
"So?"
"When you love something, you're putting it out there that you want to experience more of the same and God arranges it for you to have more. I'm glad Melinda is at the bottom because I get to hear that song again."
"But it wasn't my intention for Jessica to be at the bottom, I just love the song."
"God's way is not the human way, mum. God doesn't care about winners and losers but about giving us what we love the most."
"Thank you, God, for giving me another opportunity to hear this song," mum said, "but please let Jessica stay on."
The judge panel did keep Jessica on as her skating was far more superior than Melinda's.
I believe the purpose of life is to love, be loved and express my joy. I also believe in the irresistible power of Love to attract what I love. It is that same power that attracts people in all kinds of relationships. It's only natural really to be drawn to someone who appreciates and loves you the most. I believe when I love something or someone, I am activating Love which ends up multiplying the experience I love so I can experience more of the same in rather the same way a musician makes lots of CDs in order that more people can enjoy his music.
Speaking of musician, in the last five years there have been many bands and pop groups being reunited. I believe the reason why this is happening is because of the love of the fans which never dies. Love inspires estranged members of the band to be reunited; Love inspires record companies to support the project; and Love inspires the musicians to produce more songs to love. I've observed Love at work in the British Boy Band, Take That, who were reunited 3 years ago after being apart for 10 years. I'm a huge fan. Love dissolved grudges between the members so they were able to negotiate a new arrangement that suits all members of the group. They are now even more successful than they were before.
I was watching an interview with the American group New Kids on the Block recently, who I used to love. They were huge in the 90s and then split up. They got back together last year after a long spell apart. One member ascribed their reunion to their fans.
I believe in the irresistible power of Love.
